60 seconds with Sebastian WoodSat 17 Dec 2016
We sat down with WME’s Sebastian Wood for a quick cup of coffee and to learn more about his favourite things in London, his relationship with HUB and what he wanted to be when he was just a kid.
Hello. And you are?
Sebastian Wood, UK Director for Whitby Mohajer Engineers. We work as structural engineers supporting HUB in the design of a number of their schemes.
Favourite thing about working with HUB?
Their people value your professional view. This means that working with HUB tends to be an intellectually demanding and rewarding experience and your contribution is valued, and this makes you enjoy it and want to go the extra mile.
What's your commute like?
35 minutes door-to-door, but I consider myself lucky as my home is close to Mortlake, and our office is at Waterloo station. I don’t have to change once!
Best thing about London?
Diversity. I recently lived in New Delhi for 18 months and my mantra for my Indian staff visiting London was that anyone from any nation will feel at home here.
Favourite place for a drink?
There are many, but my favourite is my local – The Tapestry in Mortlake.
Best London lunchtime option?
That is tough…my current favourite is a lovely restaurant called Chez Mamie run by three generations of the same family. It’s on Hanway Street near Tottenham Court Road. Try it, it’ll be your favourite if you do.
Tell us something about London not many people know?
It is built with ideas from millions of diverse creative minds.
What did you want to be when you were just a kid?
A builder I think. I always wanted to build stuff (or break stuff)…but mostly I wanted to be in charge because I thought I could do it better… (not sure if you should print that sort of thing though?)
Favourite place in the world?
A harbour, watching the boats come and go. Preferably warm, but not essential.
Regent Street or Bond Street?
Bond Street. I’m not particularly well dressed but the shoe shops are the bomb.
Theatre, Musical or Gig?
Theatre. Preferably funny.
Waterloo Bridge or Westminster Bridge?
Waterloo. It’s a better view and closest to our rather lovely office.
Taxi, Walk or Boris Bike?
Walk. But I don’t walk anywhere near enough.
Best thing about your home?
The building: our Kitchen. In the broader sense: my children. Wonderful creative mayhem.
Strangest moment you've had at HUB?
Steve’s phone teleporting itself to the flat upstairs, and rather amusing attempts to locate it and get it back.
Who would play you in 'HUB, the movie'?
I’m a structural engineer, so clearly the hero of the piece – maybe Bruce Willis.
